Heard my first mandolin orchestra concert last night, the Winnipeg Mandolin Orchestra, currently celebrating 80 years of playing in this city. I was amazed at the beauty of the sound, especially when they played medelies of Ukrainian folk melodies. Also heard two local bluegrass players, who are part of the orchestra, perform a series of traditional fiddle tunes. Great stuff. My hat is off to you players of the strings. I'm a keyboard man myself.

Dear Friends in Music, This is an invitation for you to join me for a most exciting concert to take place in a beautiful and acoustically wonderful setting. As a continuation of their new Friday Night Classics Concert series, internationally renown virtuosi Tamara Volskaya "The Paganini of the Domra" and her husband Anatoliy Trofimov, master bayan accompanist and arranger, will perform on Friday, November 30, 2001 at 7:30 P.M. in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Chuch in Westfield, NJ. Intended to provide high quality music and concerts at little or no cost to varied audiences of Westfield and the surrounding communities, this is a free concert with no tickets required. Donations will be accepted to offset concert expenses. This program will feature works by a variety of composers including Vivaldi, Bach, Paginini, Tchaikovsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov as well as traditional Russian songs. For an evening of sheer enjoyment and sparkle, this is one event not to be missed. This concert is intended for the whole family. However, string and keyboard players especially will find this presentation to be both exhilarating and educational. The domra and bayan are rarely heard in a formal setting. A domra is a plucked string instrument similar to the lute or the mandolin and exists in either three or four sting versions. The bayan is similar to the accordion but has buttons instead of keys (like a piano) and is mellower in tone. Plan to attend and speak personally with the performers. Hope to you see there. The First United Methodist Church is located on One East Broad Street. There is plenty of free parking in the church parking lot which can be accessed off Ferris Place, across from the YMCA. For additional concert information, call the church office at (908) 233-4211, from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Interesting information regarding Tamara Volskaya and Anatoliy Trofimov, their instruments, performances, and recordings, can be found at www.dreamwater.com/russcarnival/ and www.doremi.com. Hi, everyone! I am a mandola player at a "newborn" mandolin orchestra in Porto, Portugal: The "Orquestra de Plectro do Porto". I also play a number of portuguese instruments, such as "cavaquinho", "viola braguesa" or "guitarra portuguesa" (all fretted). It's never too late to learn (or teach) something. So anyone interested in exchanging information about mandolas, mandolins, or just curious about typical portuguese instruments, please feel free to contact me.

Nice to find your web site, I get to Louisville now and again and will keep in touch. I have 5 mandolins, the best being a 1930 Enbergher which I've had for the last 40 years. I play every day and never travel anywhere in the world without a mandolin. I also have a tenor mandola and a rather nice French violin. Next time I'm in town I'll make contact. There are few mandolin orchestras in the UK so it's good to know of your existance. Do you tour? Best Wishes Laurie Phillips

I read the article online which discussed the Keith Harris seminar in Cleveland in 1986. I attended that seminar and was for many years was a member of the Cleveland Heights Mandolin Ensemble, which was the impetus behind Keith coming to Cleveland. In recent years I have given up playing but every now and then pick up one of my instruments. Classical mandolin music is my true interest and I am glad to see others sharing in the same interest.

The Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra, Gabriel L. Nevola, director, will present its 59th Annual Spring Concert on Sunday, May 6, beginning 3:00 P.M., in the sanctuary of the Bloomfield Presbyterian Church on the Green. Maintaining its tradition of programming excellence, the Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra will feature internationally reknown virtuosos Tamara Volskaya, “the Paganini of the Domra,” and her husband Anatoly Trofimov, “the greatest bayan accompanist in the world,” performing Kreisler's Schon Rosmarin, Tchaikovsky's Neapolitan Dance, and Kalman's Play Gypsy, Dance Gypsy. The orchestra will perform a variety of music from classical favorites such as von Flotow's Overture to Martha, Rameau's Tambourin Dance, Anitra’s Dance from Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite, and Jos Kok's Nar Buten to traditional Italian songs. Also, the program will include the New Jersey State premiere of “Na Sera T’Aspettavo,” a song specially dedicated to the orchestra by local lyricist Mario Grasso. The Bloomfield Presbyterian Church on the Green is located on 147 Broad Street (across from Bloomfield High School) in Bloomfield, New Jersey. A donation of $3.00/person is requested. For more information about this special performance, please call Filomena Peloro at (973)743-8828 or e-mail the Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra’s publicist Annamaria Menconi at: annamariamenconi@cs.com Also, please visit the Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra’s new website at: http://community.nj.com/cc/nj.mandolins

MANDOLIN DEGREE At this point in mandolin history most of the finest Classical Mandolinists are coming from Sydney, Australia. One of the reasons is the superb full time degree offered by the University of Sydney. Under the world leading mandolin tuition of Mr Adrian Hooper, and vast resourses of the university, a performce degree to Phd level is offered. Eg in 2001 a Mandolinist is undertaking a M Mus.in the performance of Avant Garde Mandolin Music. I'm a member of the Welland Ukrainian Mandolin Orchestra. We have 34 members. The Orchestra was founded in 1926 and we have 2 original members still with us. Inspite of our name most of our members are not Ukrainian. Our repertoire has traditional classical & contemporary music. I'm delighted to know that there are Orchestras from all corners of the world that feature such a wonderful instrument.

Am a fan of mandolin music, both Bluegrass and Classical. Ran across the very last minute or two of a concert of yours on KET a year or two ago. Do you have concerts on any sort of regular basis? Are there CD's available anywhere. I would be very interested to see your group at our RiverPark Center here in Owensboro. If you would be interested in coming, let me know and I will see if I can start a dialogue with some of our local folks. If you could include some kind of calendar of your activities on you web site would sure be helpful. Keep up the good work.

Having grown up listening to the mandolin as a solo instrument, its gatifying to know that people like yourselves (and others) who are taking time out to play in an orchestral fashion. I must confess to not having heard very much music in this style and look (i.e. listen) forward to buying any c.d.s in the future. Are any available now? I always thought that a mandolin quartet, using the musical ranges of a string quartet would sound greta, but having a whole orchestra with four to six "first" mandolin, and the same number of "second" madolins etc. is not nly good for listening to, but more importantly, to attract new players to this idiom. Well done. I wish you every success.

Great site ! Please update all the links when you get a chance -changes in Old Wave,Red Diamond,Georges,Smith,LMI etc are needed. Mikes' recent workshop over in Pekin, pushed me over the edge and I've bought my first mando. Practicing when I can. Ever seen this quote from the 1947, 7th edition of the Oxford Music dictionary??: " Mandolin: An instrument of somewhat the same type as the lute, but much less artistically valuable, being now in use for the most part by people who wish to paly simple music without trouble." Hey - I'm one of those ! Enjoyment and me at the center of it, playing mandolin ! Peace, g.

LMO...it is great to know that such wonderful music is being kept alive. I'm fiddle player and only just begining to play mandolin, discovering LMO and the repretoire of the mandolin. Louisville is not far and prehaps I can come visit a rehearsal or hear a concert. (One point for your web site links page... you've omitted listing a link to the Modern Mandolin Quartet! I discovered LMO by the link on MMQ's website to your site.)

Nice to see this site. I am a former member and sometime manager of the New York Mandolin Orchestra where I played mandola and first mandolin. Currently i am playing for my own enjoyment and colecting sheet music. If anyone has duets and duostyle solo pieces from turn of the 19th century to trade for copies of the same, let me know. I also have quite a few old method books i can copy from.
