Your orchestra looks interesting. At some point, I'll buy one of your cds. (I have ones fr. the Balto. Orchestra, the Milwaukee orchestra, and the Providence Orchestra. this summer I attended the Am. Mandolin and Guitar summer school run by Marilynn Mair. I'm a beginning reader (have played by ear for years), but had a great time there! Nick Royal

I enjoyed reading through your web site! I'd love to hear a concert but didn't see a schedule on your site. Anything coming up in the near future? While I have played guitar forever, a friend just bought a mandoline for me as a gift recently. Any ideas on a good instruction book? S.

How do I hold the mandolin: --like I would the classic guitar? As an enthusiastic newcomer to the Mandolin, I would like to know (without questioning my teacher's wisdom) in what position do we hold the mandolin. Was the position different in the 18th century? I keep wanting to hold it at an angle, as I would a classic guitar, but am told to hold it horizontally. Thank you. Lydia H.

I've just had my great uncle's "Stahl" mandola restored to playable condition. I cannot find instruction in this area and no instruction books for mandola, only mandoline. I guess I should have started with his mandoline instead. Can you recommend a source for an instruction book for the mandola? Thanks, Ed Flesch

I was born and raised in KY and first saw the LMO in 1991. Your orchestra inspired me greatly, and I have been playing a handmade F-style mandolin since 1992 after having one custom-made by William Parsons (also of KY). I've just learned of your website and I plan to support the LMO in any way I can to further reach communities with your beautiful music. God bless each of you!

First, let me congratulate you on a wonderful site and a great looking group of players ;). I have two mandolins. One is solid wood with a round body. The body is bi-level with the rear section having holes drilled in its face. The holes appear to have been covered by a substance other than wood...they are now plain. Does anyone have any idea what make of a mandolin this might be? Whenever anyone sees it, they don't quite know what to make of it. It's tone is louder than most mandos. Thank you.

Surfing the internet, looking for re-stringing tips for my mandolin when I found your web-site. Born & raised in Louisville, I was most interested in your orchestra and it's members (didn't Larry Hamfeldt teach at Moore High School years ago?) Anyway, my husband and I are moving to Tromso, in northern Norway in 2 months, and I'm so glad to have found your website to keep me connected to the "motherland" after we go. Keep making beautiful music together! Best regards from a "home-girl" - Beverly Barlow Steinberg

Bloomfield, NJ, February 2002 Everyone has birthday wishes and the Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra has one in mind for itself - a Gibson mandobass. The orchestra, which is celebrating its 60th Anniversary this year, has started a fundraising drive to purchase one of the few remaining of these mandobasses in the United States. According to Gabriel Nevola, conductor of the Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra, “Our orchestra specializes in preserving cultural tradition while being musically innovative. Not only would the mandobass be a perfect addition to our group, it would make the Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra the first in the New York metropolitan area to have and regularly use such an instrument.” Fundraising for the mandobass is ongoing. The orchestra hopes to acquire the instrument in time for its 60th Anniversary Spring Concert on May 5, 2002 at the Presbyterian Church On the Green in Bloomfield. Tax-deductible donations may be sent to the Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra, care of Filomena Peloro, 15 Oak Street, Bloomfield, New Jersey 07003. The Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra is a non-profit organization and one of five performing groups in the Bloomfield Federation of Music. The orchestra comprises forty four volunteer musicians from northern and central New Jersey whose age range is 17 to 90 and who represent a vast cross section of backgrounds and careers. Two of the players have been members of the orchestra since its founding in 1941. The members of the orchestra play the mandolin, mandola, mandocello, classical guitar, bass guitar, flute, and drums. For more information, please call conductor Gabriel Nevola at (973) 748-0081 and visit the orchestra’s website http: //community.nj.com/cc/nj.mandolins

Hi I will be in Louisville between 12th (evening) & 17th. I play an Embergher 1930 classical mandolin, generally accepted to be one of the finest instruments. I always travel with a mandolin, & if anyone is interested I'll bring the Embergher with me. I have the general contact no from the web site, any other local contact nos would be great as I love to meet up with mandolin nuts. I have 5 mandolins, an octave mandola, and a fiddle. I;d love to make contact whilst I'm in town. My hotel isn't settled yet. I mainly play Celetic music, and have had the Embergher for 40 years it's a wonderful instrument favoured by professional players in the UK. Hope to meet up with, are you playing anywhere next week? Best Wishes Laurie (Mr in case your wondering)
